San Cristobal Island is the easternmost island in the Galapagos archipelago, which belongs to Ecuador. It is famous as the island where Charles Darwin first went ashore in 1835. A variety of wildlife makes its home on the island, including Galapagos tortoises, Galapagos sea lions, frigate birds, blue and red footed boobies, great blue herons, marine iguanas, dolphins and swallow-tailed seagulls. Most of the residents of the island live in the port city of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, which is also the capital of Ecuador’s Galapagos province.
