This breathtaking 247-acre island in Normandy is one of France's most well-known landscapes and is called "The Wonder of the Western World." Mont Saint Michel contains a walled medieval city that was started when Bishop of Avranches Aubert first built a church on the island in 709 at the request of Archangel Michel. The small community of less than 50 residents has preserved its medieval architecture and is one of France's most visited attractions welcoming 3.5 million people every year. Mont Saint Michel is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.
