The well-preserved Georgian style Episcopal church located in Lancaster County, Virginia was completed in 1735 and was renowned in colonial times for its superb architecture. It was requested by Robert "King" Carter and became the official church and social center for the colony. Historic Christ Church still has its original high-backed box pews and triple-decker pulpit. A wooden church built in 1670 occupied the site previously. Historic Christ Church is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
