The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range overlooks this California city established in 1872 by the Central Pacific Railroad Co. Fresno is located in the San Joaquin Valley in the central part of the state and is a major agricultural center of the country. It is sometimes called "California's Year-Round Playground" because of its abundance of recreational areas and activities including skiiing, snowboarding, hiking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking and horseback riding. The city's Old Fresno Water Tower was constructed in 1894 and is now a visitor's center.
