The largest city in the state of Maryland is the second biggest seaport among the Mid-Atlantic states and is situated on the Patapsco River. Baltimore was established in 1729 and was the site of the War of 1812's Battle of Baltimore that inspired the United States national anthem "Star-Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key. The city contains the prestigious institutions of Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University.
